A penthouse in Cairnhill by Architology Interiors pays homage to the wonders of dusk and its radiant tones

Come golden hour, this hilltop 2,077 sq ft three-bedroom Cairnhill penthouse is radiantly lit up by soft rays. Located a stone’s throw from the heart of Orchard Road, the surrounding cityscape views will capture one’s attention.

Working around unique yet unchangeable elements, such as the home’s concave floor plan and a structural column in the living room, presented opportunities to leverage creativity for form and function. Tasked with making magic in the space, Terrence Quah of Architology Interiors delivered an articulation of luxury and novelty to evoke warmth for owners and guests alike. Elegant yet novel materiality augmented the overall design, present in the myriad of textures and fixtures that signal the home’s role as a welcoming haven.

Sculpting belonging

Charmed by the abundant light that filters through the apartment, the designer saw a vision of golden hour’s wonder being an everyday occurrence. The home features a tonal palette of creams and golds, evoking ethereality when light rays filter through its spaces. A vision of luxury that assuredly whispers was realised through a seemingly unlikely combination of surfaces, lines, and materials reflective of different aesthetics.

In a corner of the living room, a structural column clad in mosaic tiles, complete with ambient lighting at its top and bottom, commands attention. A bespoke dual-sided sofa wraps around the column, softening the initial visual impact of spotting the column from the entrance.

The travertine feature television wall is punctuated by a floating metallic console and white KEF speakers with yellow accents. Full-length glass doors open to the outdoor balcony, covered by a perforated metal sunshade, complete with an olive tree and happiness trees.

Along the balcony, Roman blinds and day curtains were placed to soften the edges of the corners and ceilings without obstructing the view of the surroundings.

A delicate dance

Next to the entryway, the dining area’s bronze-tone mirror backdrop reflects the home’s communal areas, while subtly colouring its surroundings. To its right, the open-concept kitchen features a myriad of textures. A semi-industrial luxurious impression was created with a row of short stainless-steel cabinets to one side.

Tall cabinets that conceal integrated fridges and ample storage space seamlessly blend in with the kitchen walls. The cabinets and walls are clad in an innovative heat-formed material simulating natural stone.

An intricately detailed, soft-cornered triangle kitchen island is carved out of Taj Mahal marble, a visual counterpart to the similarly shaped sofa.

Out of sight, but not nearly out of mind, is the integration of robotic cleaners in kitchen design, complete with water and drainage points carefully concealed within cabinetry.

Quah found an unlikely muse in the form of an edgy down-tempo acid-jazz album titled Wallpaper Mach 1.5-Limitless Luxury. His conviction in combining highly contrasting yet surprisingly complementary materials within the same space “was birthed from the blending of eclectic traditional yet futuristic tones of Mach 1.5”.
